Love Dies Twice

Barbara Wilson

Cassandra Reilly, the Irish-American translator and amateur sleuth, shares a flat in London with her long-time friend, retired bassoonist Nicky Gibbons. Their lives are disrupted when Cassandra attends a lecture on the beguines, laywomen who lived in sisterhood in thirteenth-century Belgium. The beguines were the subject of a popular historical mystery series by Stella Terwicker who died ten years before, but whose literary estate is still creating problems for those who knew her, including her biographer. Cassandra is soon pulled into investigating a possibly suspicious death, a task that takes her from the Ladies' Pond in London's Hampstead Heath to the medieval city of Bruges to the seacoast of Devon. With Nicky's help, Cassandra must unravel a story of desire, lies, and love that stretches back decades to the rabble-rousing years of women's liberation and feminist publishing. Sixth in the Cassandra Reilly series, which began in 1990 with Gaudi Afternoon. Ms. Wilson's...

Murder in the Collective

Murder in the Collective

Barbara Wilson

Seattle printing collective owner Pam Nilsen is on the case when a member of the group turns up dead before a controversial mergerPam Nilsen and her twin sister, Penny, inherited Best Printing four years ago when their parents died in a car crash. Unwilling to sell their family legacy, the sisters turned it into a collective run by a cadre of activists whose arguments over the business can be just as impassioned as their support for progressive causes. But internal divisions at the collective pale in comparison to those between Seattle typesetters B. Violet and Moby Dick—once a single company that has since broken apart into an all-female (and lesbian-run) company, and an all-male (and quickly bankrupt) operation.Shortly after Best Printing and B. Violet begin discussing a merger, the offices of the typesetter are ransacked, one of their members nowhere to be found. Then an employee of Best Printing is found murdered. It appears as if someone will stop at nothing—not even murder—to prevent the merger. And it’s up to Pam to get to the bottom of this deadly turn of events before the killer strikes again.Murder in the Collective is the first book in the Pam Nilsen Mystery trilogy, which continues with Sisters of the Road and The Dog Collar Murders.*Review“The narrative is engrossing, evenly paced, and refreshingly unique.” —Booklist“The action never lets up, the writing is taut and smart, and every time a cute, pat solution for a situation arises, Wilson steers clear.” —Voice Literary Supplement“A strong, witty and very well-written book.” —Time Out London“A radical stab in the back for that tired old genre, the whodunit. We all did it, that’s the point of a collective.” —The ListenerProduct DetailsFile Size: 1049 KBPrint Length: 226 pagesPublisher: Open Road Media (November 12, 2013)Sold by: Amazon Digital Services, Inc. September 13, 2000By A CustomerFormat:PaperbackI found this mystery on the sale shelf of a local bookstore. Even though the book was written over a decade ago it isn't dated. I enjoyed Barbara Wilson's characters and her infusion of geopolitics. Nothing felt contrived or cliche, which of course is rare for mysteries. I especially liked her sleuth Pam Nilson. The characters, dialogue and the plot all seemed logical. My only minor complaint would be with the climax, which seemed a bit of a letdown, but otherwise I can recommend this msytery.I look forward to reading other books in this series and also her other mystery series. The Case of the Orphaned Bassoonists

The Case of the Orphaned Bassoonists

Barbara Wilson

Barbara Wilson

Cassandra Reilly travels to Venice to solve the mystery of a missing bassoon, and lands in the midst of an international cast of characters who all have something to hideAt the Venice-based symposium on women musicians of Vivaldi’s time, an instrument has gone missing: an antique bassoon, an invaluable family heirloom—and bassoonist Nicky Gibbons stands accused of the theft. Determined to clear her name, Nicky calls Cassandra Reilly—lesbian translator and part-time sleuth extraordinaire—and summons her to the City of Water. Fifteen scholars and musicians are attending the symposium, and each has a multitude of quirks and secrets—as well as motive to steal the bassoon. As Cassandra investigates, she immerses herself in the world of Baroque music, the tangle of personal intrigues at the symposium, and a second mystery involving the orphaned bassoonists of eighteenth-century Venice.Wry, intelligent, and atmospheric, The Case of the Orphaned Bassoonists is the fourth and final book in the Cassandra Reilly Mystery series, which begins with Gaudí Afternoon, Trouble in Transylvania, and The Death of a Much-Travelled Woman. From Publishers WeeklyThe present-day international classical-music scene meets Vivaldi-era Venice in Wilson's third winning tale featuring translator and amateur detective Cassandra Reilly. The jet-setting lesbian heroine obligingly sets off for Italy to help her friend, bassoonist Nicky Gibbons, who stands accused of stealing a priceless antique bassoon during a symposium on women musicians of Vivaldi's time. Symposium organizer Alfredo Sandretti insists that Nicky stole the valuable bassoon, but whether she did or didn't soon becomes irrelevant, because as Cassandra slyly interviews each of the possible suspects, she learns that they're all harboring their own secrets (or, as she later discovers, are gifted liars). Mousy oboist Anna de Hoog is in town to play in the concert, in spite of her lack of virtuosity; Gunther, a German with a promiscuous mistress, is constantly making frantic calls to his alleged grandmother; and Vivaldi expert Andrew McManus seems more intent on garnering the attention of Sandretti's son, Marco, than anything else. Running concurrently with the stolen instrument story is the more intriguing, yet lamentably not as fully developed, mystery of the orphaned bassoonists of Baroque Venice. While this novel lacks a unifying thread, Wilson nonetheless has marvelously depicted Venice and its history, introducing modern (if nutty) women personalities that should please feminist readers. (Oct.) Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc. From BooklistThe many moods and shifting colors of Venice come alive in Wilson's masterful third in the Reilly European Trilogy. Cassandra arrives to help her friend, bassoonist Nicola Gibbons, who's been accused of stealing an antique bassoon while attending a conference on women musicians of the Vivaldi era. She arrives at a grand villa to find an odd assortment of conferees, including a Canadian bassoonist/scholar; a strangely drab and untalented Dutch oboist; a couple of tall Nordic baroque bassoonists embroiled in a teutonically torrid affair; and the hosts: the domineering, hot-tempered Alfredo Sandretti and his browbeaten son, Marco, who will do anything--anything?--to please him. Cassandra manages to locate the missing bassoon but finds that a murder by drowning has muddied the waters. Whitney ScottCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

Cassandra Reilly is embroiled in a case of international intrigue and murder as two factions battle over a crumbling resortLondon-based lesbian translator and part-time sleuth Cassandra Reilly is on the move again. Her latest trip is to China, via Eastern Europe, where, upon receiving a call about a murder in a run-down Transylvanian health spa, she suddenly finds herself embroiled in a murky and wholly unusual investigation. The woman accused of the murder, Gladys Bentwhistle, had previously met Cassandra on the train. She begs Cassandra for help and, unable to resist her own insatiable curiosity and hunger for adventure, Cassandra says yes.As the mystery unfolds, Cassandra and her cohort, including her friend Jacqueline and potential love interest, Eva, are steeped in the history of Romania, from the devastating relics of Ceausescu’s tyrannical reign to the vampire folklore born in the region centuries ago.Surprising, gripping, and funny, Trouble in Transylvania is the second book in the Cassandra Reilly Mystery series, which begins with Gaudí Afternoon and continues with The Death of a Much-Travelled Woman and The Case of the Orphaned Bassoonists. From Publishers WeeklyThis second outing for lesbian sleuth and professional translator Cassandra Reilly follows a trail of intrigue and murder at a Transylvanian health spa. Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc. From Library JournalOstensibly a publisher's translator, Cassandra Reilly labors only to travel (as in Gaudi Afternoon , Seal Pr.-Feminist, 1990). The middle-aged, London-based lesbian, presently on her way to China by way of Budapest, encounters a vibrant, seventyish woman and her nubile granddaughter on the train. Irrepressible Gladys Bentwhistle, soon accused of murdering an ancient health spa owner in Transylvania, begs waggish Cassandra (a speaker of Romanian?) for help. Cassandra, her friend Jacqueline ("Jack"), and the potential conquest Eva then enter the fray. This amateur has a mind like a steel trap, a literate, uplifting voice, and a wicked sense of humor. Great fun.Copyright 1993 Reed Business Information, Inc.

The Death of a Much-Travelled Woman gathers in one volume the exploits and mishaps of the globetrotting Cassandra Reilly. In these nine madcap investigations, Cassandra journeys to such varied locations as Helsinki, Hawaii, Vladivostock, Reykjavik, and the English countryside. The crimes Cassandra encounters are engagingly literary, with more than a dash of satire aimed at publishers, editors, writers, and of course, translators. Wilson's first Cassandra Reilly mystery Gaudi Afternoon is currently being made into a motion picture.

When a teenage runaway is murdered and her best friend goes missing, Pam Nilsen must dig into the seedy underbellies of Seattle and Portland to discover the truthPam Nilsen, co-owner of Seattle collective Best Printing, is still recovering from the heartbreak of her first real girlfriend leaving town when she decides to take two young prostitutes under her wing. The girls, age fourteen, are already coarsened by the worlds of sex, drugs, and crime. When one turns up dead and the other, Trish, is nowhere to be found, Pam hits the streets to find her. Trish, a possible witness to murder, is in danger, but for a runaway child of the night, help is in short supply. Pam is Trish’s only hope—not just for her immediate survival, but for escaping the streets before they can devour her.Sisters of the Road is the second book in the Pam Nilsen Mystery trilogy, which begins with Murder in the Collective and concludes with The Dog Collar Murders.*Review“It is Pam’s capacity for caring about people that makes this novel so compelling. She is inexperienced in almost every aspect of her life: running a business, being gay, and routing out killers and child abusers. But her passionate commitment to people makes it impossible for her to give up on others or on herself. Wilson’s forte is depicting this extraordinary quality without letting its possessor appear to be a plaster saint. She portrays exactly how good and evil evolve from the needs and impulses of ordinary people.” —Independent PublisherProduct DetailsFile Size: 1042 KBPrint Length: 208 pagesPublisher: Open Road Media (November 12, 2013)Sold by: Amazon Digital Services, Inc. The Dog Collar Murders

The Dog Collar Murders

Barbara Wilson

Barbara Wilson

When an antipornography activist dies after a provocative speech, Pam Nilsen dives headlong into Seattle’s feminist community to uncover a murdererThe Seattle Conference on Sexuality is a lightning rod for controversy, with big politics and even bigger personalities descending on the city to discuss issues ranging from pornography to violence against women. Loie Marsh is one such personality, an outspoken critic of porn slated to speak on a panel about the subject. But before she can take her place on stage, Loie is found dead, strangled with a dog collar.Pam Nilsen, the co-owner of a progressive printing collective with significant connections in Seattle’s activist community, is uniquely positioned to investigate the murder. Suspects include a member of Christians Against Pornography, an S/M advocate who owned the dog collar used to commit the murder, a producer of erotic lesbian videos, and Loie’s ex-husband—not to mention her resentful ex-lover. It’s an unconventional whodunit, but one that Pam is more than ready to take on.The Dog Collar Murders is the final book in the Pam Nilsen Mystery trilogy, which begins with Murder in the Collective and Sisters of the Road*.Review“In this clever and illuminating third installment in a series, Wilson manipulates the detective/mystery genre to explore issues at the heart of feminist debate over sexuality, pornography and violence against women.” —Publishers Weekly“Although quick and entertaining reads, Wilson’s books are, to a greater extent than many more self-consciously literary works, novels of ideas—and of ideas important to feminism.” —The Women’s Review of Books“[Wilson is] the most adventurous of the new wave of feminist thriller writers.” —Feminist ReviewProduct DetailsFile Size: 889 KBPrint Length: 183 pagesPublisher: Open Road Media (November 12, 2013)Sold by: Amazon Digital Services, Inc. September 3, 2001By Anselm de BeauvilleFormat:PaperbackBarbara Wilson: The Dog Collar MurdersThe book takes you back to those days of clear distinction between goodies and baddies, the Nicaragua solidarity movement and the ideological self-conscious feminist anti-porn activists of the 1980s. This side of the book is utterly amusing if you still remember how it then was. This feminist world's atmosphere of prudishness, sexual inhibition translated into anti-porn activity, the bigotry and fear of sex, the McCarthyish, almost fascist readiness to oppress other opinions by all means. It is amusing because this ideology never gained much power in society ' if it had, the book would be guilty of making things look more harmless than they were. However the book is meant to be a detective story. And as such it is utterly boring because one third of it are theoretical discussions that make the book look like a rather shallow essay on feminism and sexual exploitation and pornography etc. It is possible to mix detective stories with political messages. But it has to be very well done to be convincing. Read the books by Sjöwall/Waalhöö and T. Mankell (both are Swedish but widely translated) if you want to see what I mean.Wilson's story line is unrefined, the language unimaginative and schematic. Although the murderer is only predictable from about the beginning of the last third of the book, the final revelation does not satisfy ' because the personalities are so poorly drawn that they give no feeling for them as persons. And so unmasking on of them as murderer does not mean much 'even at this stage the person, i.e. after over 200 pp is not much more than a name on paper. Wilson in this book compares herself to Agatha Christie ' a bit presumptuous. A huge bit, actually.
