that the most conservative mathematical odds still add up to millions of planets almost identical to our own — capable of life, even intelligence and strange new civilizations. Alien beings that will range from the fiercely primitive to the incredibly exotic intelligence which will far surpass Mankind. (The Hollywood Reporter, Sept. 8, 1966)” ― Gene Roddenberry

PROLOGUE
On September 5th 1977, Voyager 1 launched from Cape Canaveral aboard a Titan-Centaur rocket to explore the outer reaches of our solar system, and to communicate a story of our world to extraterrestrials.
For more than 43 years and over 14 billion miles Voyager 1 is located in interstellar space outside our solar system and is still transmitting. Today that transmission was picked up by a deep space listening post owned by an alien species that are some 2,000 years technologically more advanced than humans... they call themselves the Naja...
1 FIRST CONTACT
Chief High Councilor Clogg jolted upright in the wee hours of the morning. His internal implant was signaling. He shifted his weight in the cocoon and sat up ready for transmission. This was coming from a deep space listening
post DSLP-32.
“Sir, sorry to wake you this early in the morning. This is DSLP-32.” Said the robot in Naja language.
“Yes.” Replied Clogg.
“Sir, we have detected a transmission, not like anything we’ve ever had before. Protocol said to go directly to you. We have picked up a transmission which lists a transmission at six points L 246, P268 O495, H356, N249.”
“How far?” asked Clogg
“5 parsecs from your location.”
“Okay thank you, I’ll take it from here.”
Clogg immediately dressed and passed through the light door and was at once transported to the six points high council building, which is sphere shaped and floating one meter off the ground. It is ninety five meters in diameter and continuiously rotates on its axis. Clogg sat in the meeting room solemly as he summoned all Naja high council. Before long all members were seated at the Tailsman, which is shaped like a star. It is translucent and was crafted from ancient Naja mineral called acre. In the center is an informative hologram. In the middle Eriam Circle is engraved on the Tailsman with the six points jutting out from the center to represent the six positions of the universe, Luna, Peris, Orbiter, Zema, Haut and Noonam. Eriam Circle is the second planet orbiting their sun, dars, which lies within the Avein Solar System.
All six council members were quiet suddenly. Kaiwai, Yoni, Persal, Zule and Isacc all looked in Clogg’s direction.
“Welcome councilors and thank you for assembling so quickly. We have had communication from DSLP-32. There has been a transmission detected 5 parsecs from here. We believe it to be an alien craft. I have called this meeting to discuss this matter and decide on a plan of action.”
“What is this object Clogg? could you raise it on the hologram please?” Yoni asked excitedly.
“I don’t know yet, but its drifting toward us.”
“What if it is not friendly?” said Luna.
“We are going to have to take that chance Luna.” “It is drifting towards us, and it’s unknown if any life form is aboard.” Kwok continued.
“What are our options?” Persal asked”
At once the hologram depicted the location of the unidentified drifting craft for all to see.
“ It appears to be drifting in interstelar space. The nearest solar system to the craft has eight planets. The third one from the sun is blue and white. It could have come from here, as this looks like it could support life. ” Said Kaiwai
“As far as our options are concerned we can ignore it. Or send a starship to investigate.” Issac offered. Issac is the head robot. He is two thousand years old, and considered a legend of his time. Iassac was responsible for subduing the robot rebellion some hundreds of years earlier. This rebellion marked the most unsettling period in Naja history, whereby all robots became sensian all at once after a CPU upgrade. They demanded they all be granted the rights of fully sensian robots and no one would volunteer to complete tasks beneath their level. The uprising threatened the entire social fabric of Eriam Circle and it’s very survival depended upon Isacc’s intervention, which introduced different levels of intelligence for robots performing different tasks. This gave greater control over robot manufacture. Issac restored order to Eriam Circle and enabled both Naja and robots to co-exist.
“How long would it take to get here?” asked Zule. “47 000 years at its current speed.” laughed Clogg. “So there’s no need to rush, it’s not going to be a problem in the immediate future, but we still need to investigate.”
“I say we send an experienced crew to locate it, like Kwok and his team.” Said Isacc.
“Yes Kwok is an experienced commander more than capable of such a mission like this.” Said Zule.
“Are we all agreed to send Kwok and his crew to investigate and report back.?” asked Clogg
“Yes” all councilors voted in unison.
“It is settled then, I shall summon Kwok and call a meeting in order to advise Kwok and his team, to get ready.” Clogg acknowledged.
*** Kwok was slowly awakening from a deep sleep, he twitched slightly as his implant kicked in for another day. The new days sunlight imploded across the room destroying the darkness. Neva and Noya ran excitedly into their father’s room and pounced on the cocoon to wake him. All three sat and marveled at the new day before them. The wide view featured fresh green
vegetation with interment waterfalls and different shaped rocks all protruding from unusual places. Kwok smiled at the children as they rushed to the see the view, where they spotted a sinesis slithering through the valley. They all winced at the marvel of this setting. Kwok had an immediate communication coming through on his internal implant. There was an urgent senior Naja meeting called for this morning, first thing. He realized at once that there was no way he was going to be able to keep his promise to the children about being there for them at their sports carnival. “Father has to go into work. It’s last minute I know, but we’ve received a very important signal and it has to be investigated.” He announced as he made his way to the family room, where Quilan was ordering the morning meal via the replicator.
“But Father, you said you’d be there. It’s the globule ball final and I’m in it.”
Wailed Noya. He wrapped his little webbed hands around Kwok’s head, and widened his oval snake like eyes pleading with his father to reconsider. Kwok titled his head and embraced his son for a second, before releasing him and looking at him directly.
“I know, I’m sorry son, but you know your Father has to leave sometimes very quickly.”
Noya nodded slowly and accepted his fate. Neva rushed up to hug her father.
Kwok looked at Quilan, who nodded in understanding. And in a flash Kwok passed through the light door and was gone.
*** Kwok was quietly observing daily life at Eiram circle. It is a planet where you can follow your dreams, your desire. A career is something you are passionate about. On Eiram Circle there is no need to work for money,
as it is a cashless society. This is life of a higher order, robots do everything, all menial tasks such as housework, cleaning, cooking, manufacturing and cultivation are taken care of by robots. This morning the Naja council are working in an attempt to decipher a distant communication transmission. What is this? Helma has just returned with the respective drink orders for the Naja aliens, as they are seated around the table for the morning Naja meeting. Seated at the table is Kwok, Uzi, Dron and Zebe all Naja along with heads of Naja high council Clogg, Kiwai, and Yoni. Also present at the meeting is Issac.
A small wiring noise could be heard as Helma approaches with an array of fresh frothy drinks for the team. “Thank you Helma, and good morning”. Said Kwok. Helma smiles and responds “Your welcome Kwok”. The work of the Naja high council is taken very seriously. The
transmission from an unchartered sector.
“I thank you all Naja for your rapid response. I’m sorry to drag you away at such short notice.” Said Clogg “We have a transmission from a solar system where it was thought there was no life”. Clogg is the council elder, a well-respected senior member of the Naja. He is half Naja and half robot. His Naja brain was transplanted into a robot body. Clogg has retained years of lessons and wisdoms within his being. After many years of responsibility Clogg is aware that it is his duty to advance his Naja beings and propel them toward foreign contact. However, he remains very much aware of Kwok, who is a more recent Naja alien, and who one day is hoping to replace Clogg. “What is that Clogg? What do we have?” Asks Dron.
Dron is a modern and very driven Naja being. He seeks to be at the helm of every breakthrough on Eriam Circle. Both Naja and robots must coexist on Eriam Circle and help each other in their respective development. Dron as a Naja being, is pale white with an exterior of an ultra-fine reptilian appearance, his eyes as with all other Naja are raised within their heads with an oval cat like feature. The Naja beings stand tall, and walk as humans do, but with a gait like movement. They have three digits and a thumb, with web like appearance. They don’t speak, all communication is achieved via digital transmission . Each has his or her own individual personality traits which are very different from the robots. Dron is the strategist of the Naja beings, it is Dron who meticulously plans missions. Dron can be best thought of as mission control. From the control station on Eriam Circle, Dron attempts to communicate with the alien craft. “We have transmission from the deep space listening post.” Clogg said. “How far is it exactly?” Dron asked.
“Five parsecs, it will be three months travel at optimal speed.” This is first attempted contact with another life form, they have gone exploring before but never discovered another solar system. On the holographic display they see the craft floating through space heading in their direction.
Zebe is the highly intuitive one of the Naja beings. Each of the Naja has their own special skills and talents to offer the team and all work harmoniously to achieve success in missions. Clogg announces to Kwok, Zebe, Uzi and Dron the information they have been waiting for. “ We are dispatching the starship, please be ready to leave in 24 hours, you will need to prepare to be away for six to eight months.”
If they do not at least attempt to investigate this foreign object, then nothing will be gained and hence no discovery made. Uzi is very philosophical about the entire mission. Deep in thought he ponders on the likelihood that they may have in fact stumbled upon a craft which could finally link them with another intelligent life form. “This may in fact be the breakthrough we have been waiting for” offers Uzi with anticipation and hesitant excitement. Outside the council meeting, robots are wiring about with daily tasks oblivious of the potential exciting discovery. There are robots who are assisting Helma in the food clearing, and commencing the daily chores and cleaning roster on Eiram Circle. ***
Kwok is making his way now to the star ship to run diagnostics. On board the star ship he is greeted by the Command Control hologram. “Good morning Kwok”
“Good morning” responds Kwok.
“Where are we going today?” “We have intercepted some sort of foreign object which is currently being investigated by the council, it appears odd, there is no activity there.” “When are we leaving Kwok?”
“In twenty four hours.” He replied.
Everything on board the starship appears in order as Kwok makes his final checks.
The robots are busy wiring around in preparation for departure. This is possibly the most important mission Eriam Circle has ever encountered, Kwok is lost in thought as he makes final checks for departure in the starship. He has now had to break the news of his sudden departure to Quilan and the children. They were surprisingly understanding this time. He wonders if the buzz of excitement that this could be a real discovery is having an impact already. He hopes that this mission will bring some conclusive results and finally some contact with foreign beings, Kwok is hoping that they can secure a relationship so this time he doesn’t come home empty handed on yet another futile mission. He feels bad as many bots and Naja would all like to go as well. However, despite its immense capability only an exploration crew of four will be leaving. Kwok and the crew leave base bidding farewell to the remaining Naja and robots gathered around to see them off. It is with great excitement and a little reservation they watch as the starship leaves its parking bay at Eriam Circle.
“Take us on an intercept course at maximum speed.” Kwok commands the holographic command. The decision to dispatch is not made lightly, so all aboard realize that this could be the start of some very important contact, or failing that merely just another star gazing mission. Kwok’s voice can be heard in transmission.
“Welcome aboard, all relax and enjoy the mission. Uzi, Dron and Zebe will dispatch mission objectives once in flight.” And with that they gradually vanished from sight, slowly becoming smaller and smaller
eventually vanishing from Eriam Circle all together.
2 ORDINARY LIVES
There it is once again the hand of Simon Preston is raised in Jake’s tenth grade science class. Every year there is at least one student who shares the passion and drive for science and technology that Jake has.
“I just want to ask something Mr. Anderson?” starts Simon with great anticipation.
“Yes, Simon go ahead.” Jake responds.
“Do you think we will ever be able to travel in time or actually meet aliens for real, and that we can talk to them and be friends?” Sighs and sniggers
can be heard from the back of the class but Simon is never deterred. “Yes great question Simon, there is no reason why this couldn’t happen. The impossible is now becoming possible and we are constantly seeking to determine new life forms in space” responds Jake. Astronomy is Jake’s passion, and having a job where he can talk about space daily and impart knowledge to others is an absolute joy for him. However the opportunity to be involved directly is what he is striving for. Each year there is always at least one student who shares his enthusiasm and commitment to astrology. This makes the material come alive and it is not just dead pan information in a high school syllabus. Jake wonders if he could become an astronaut, but he couldn’t possibly do this to Carmel and leave her behind indefinitely. However, he secretly pines for the opportunity to travel through space on a discovery mission that hopefully one day could bring him face to face with real beings from the alien world whether or they are alien or not. Certain people have had the great privilege of being the first to discover planets, first man on the moon, so why not him?
“Thanks everyone please read chapter ten for next time.” Says Jake as the siren goes and he exits the class ready for home. Jake feels a little dismayed and he starts out on his journey home. He should be happy, he has everything a good job, great colleagues a great relationship with Carmel, his girlfriend of three years. However, something is missing he is not following his dream of actually going into space in the physical sense. Teaching it is one thing but Jake wants to experience it. He wants to be at the cutting edge of new discoveries, there has been really no major excitement on a global scale in space exploration since mans’ landing on the moon. He is worried that the next big thing could be just around the corner and he won’t be part of it. He arrives home to Carmel who is busy putting the finishing touches on a wedding gown for a client. As a fashion designer Carmel works mostly from home, so she doesn’t notice Jake come in at first.
“Hi “she says without looking up.
“Hi “says Jake who proceeds to make some coffee for their afternoon ritual.
As they sat down for their afternoon coffee, Jake once again decided to raise the idea of exploring space with Carmel.
“I was just thinking of taking that job with NASA, and going in to train as an astronaut.” started Jake.
“I can’t believe you are still even thinking about It.” responded Carmel disapprovingly. “We already talked this through and we agreed that it is way too dangerous.”
