The Reign of the Favored Women

Ann Chamberlin

Ann Chamberlin

From harem slaves to empresses with global power, the Reign of the Favored Women was a watershed period in world history. The great Turkish empire of the seventeenth century, the most powerful of its day, was ruled by women who had been brought to Constantinople as slaves for the Sultan's pleasure -- but used their slavery to acquire power on a global scale. The Venetian-born Safiye, "the Fair One" as she is known, is the embodiement of the newly coined term "Machiavellian". With her perfumed body and bewitching eyes, she rules the men who own her. She controls the Empire from within the veiled harem walls, her web of intrigue reaching far beyond Constantinople and into Europe. Her touch is felt in wars, acts of sabotage, and the machinations of both European and Asian politics. The aim of her ambition? To see that her son becomes ruler of the Ottoman Empire. She will allow nothing to stand in her way.

Robert Campbell

Robert Campbell

** "Robert Campbell is terrific" raves the Boston Globe.** Jimmy's feathers aren't easily ruffled, but when bullets start flying , the committeeman flies into action. Soon he's searching for a killer in the middle of a rough-and-tumble Windy City campaign. And entering a political dark alley that leads to a secret that could shatter Jimmy's world. Now the Edgar-winning author sends amateur sleuth Jimmy Flannery on his eleventh-and most baffling-case to date. This time the feisty committeeman of Chicago's notorious Twenty-seventh Ward lands smack in the middle of a political hotpot that nearly cooks his goose.... Nothing stops Leo Lundatos from getting what he wants---not even a call girl murder scandal and a stretch in the clink for fraud and abuse. Planning to rebuild his power base with a run for alderman, the once powerful congressman asks Jimmy Flannery to run for ward leader of the famous Eleventh: The Mayor's Ward. Jimmy's not so sure this step up the ladder is a good idea. Already new pals and old enemies are crawling out of the woodwork. And even before his family convinces him to go for it, he's got his hands full. A gaggle of militant right-wingers is up in arms to ban "offensive" books from the public schools. If they're outraged now, just wait till they get a load of Jimmy's potpourri campaign staff: Sada Spisselman, his aunt and a renowned socialist, is set to run the show; lipstick lesbian Janet Canarias, his closest ally, is to be chief strategist; and ex-cop Mabel Halstead will be his right-hand man. In fact, Mabel was a man before her sex change. The final ingredient is principal backer Maggie Lundatos, Leo's gorgeous, soon-to-be ex-wife, who's got a thirst for power and an eye for Jimmy. All this on a ticket in a largely Catholic ward.

The Intuitionist

The Intuitionist

Colson Whitehead

Literature & Fiction / Nonfiction

Verticality, architectural and social, is the lofty idea at the heart of Colson Whitehead's first novel that takes place in an unnamed high-rise city that combines 21st-century engineering feats with 19th-century pork-barrel politics. Elevators are the technological expression of the vertical ideal, and Lila Mae Watson, the city's first black female elevator inspector, is its embattled token of upward mobility. When Number Eleven of the newly completed Fanny Briggs Memorial Building goes into deadly free-fall just hours after Lila Mae has signed off on it, using the controversial "Intuitionist" method of ascertaining elevator safety, both Intuitionists and Empiricists recognize the set-up, but may be willing to let Lila Mae take the fall in an election year. As Lila Mae strives to exonerate herself in this urgent adventure full of government spies, underworld hit men, and seductive double agents, behind the action, always, is the Idea. Lila Mae's quest is mysteriously entwined with existence of heretofore lost writings by James Fulton, father of Intuitionism, a giant of vertical thought. If she is able to find and reveal his plan for the perfect, next-generation elevator, the city as it now exists may instantly become obsolescent.--Joyce Thompson

Twilight Watch

Sergei Lukyanenko

Science Fiction / Fantasy

Twilight Watch (sometimes translated Dusk Watch) (Russian: Sumerechniy Dozor, ?????????? ?????) is a fantasy novel by Russian writer Sergey Lukyanenko. It is the sequel to The Night Watch and Day Watch and the third part of tetralogy that concludes with Final Watch. Lukyanenko returns to a structure closer to that he used in the Night Watch novel than the Day Watch novel. Twilight Watch is divided into three stories- Nobody's Time, Nobody's Space, and Nobody's Power. Each story begins with a prologue followed by seven numbered chapters and concluding with an Epilogue. Except for the prologues, the events of each story are written in a first person narrative using the voice of the Light Magician character Anton Gorodetsky, a member of Night Watch. Events in each of the prologues are written in a third person narrative and take place entirely outside of Gordetsky's presence. The entire novel is written in the past tense.
